Family Photo Session - Lavender Bay | Photo Finish Photography | Sydney Portrait Photographer
When was the last time your extended family had their portraits taken? For most people with busy, growing families, the answer is never all of us together.
Growing up I remember we would have extended family photo sessions at all the big occasions. Usually every Chinese New Year at our favourite Yum Cha restaurant or at my Grandma’s next big birthday (also at our favourite Yum Cha restaurant). Looking back at it, we really were creatures of habit. The occasion would change but the venue rarely did. Maybe because to find a venue big enough to fit all of my extended family in was a feat in itself.
This family came to me last Christmas looking to buy a timeless gift for each of their loved ones in their extended family. They purchased a 1 hour photo session and one large framed print for the grandparents and one each for the subfamilies. Once the images had been edited and ready to be presented at the Viewing and Ordering Session, we took our time to carefully pick the correct image at the correct size, frame colour, etc. It was then up to each of the subfamilies to buy any additional images they wanted for their family and it was so interesting to see that they all chose very similar shots.
Extended family photo sessions are a most efficient and clever way of doing photos as no one is ever going to hang 100 photos of themselves around the house so to share it with your extended family and get the large family pic whilst you’re at it as well as all the different combinations of family is just brilliant.
I always tell my clients to invite the grandparents to a shoot, it doesn’t cost anymore anyway and the kids can see how they fit in the family unit.
We take many more photos these days then we ever did in the past, but how many of these are truly treasured, printed out and hung up on walls?
I believe in heirloom photographs and hence why I focus so much on a boutique service for my clients. Let’s understand you’re trying to create, the feelings you want to feel, understand your space and let’s put it all together!!! There are many favourite parts to my job and creating family art galleries for your walls is definitely one of them! :)
