Top 5 Tips on What To Wear For A Multigenerational Family Photo Session
This is by far the most common question I get asked when clients book in for a multigenerational (aka extended) family photo session.
Consider this:
💟One of your beloved family members (the organiser) has made a huuuuge effort to coordinate with various parties to make sure EVERYONE (some from interstate and/or internationally) will be together at the same place and time for the big family photo shoot to celebrate Mum’s 70th birthday.
💟The organiser has been liaising with the other family members for weeks over the whatsapp chat to decide on location, outfits, cost and logistics.
💟The family decides that they are going to coordinate their colours in different shades of blues, neutrals and whites as the photo shoot location will be in a lush, green, gorgeous garden (AND it’s spring, so flowers will be in bloom🌼🌼🌼).
💟Somehow, Auntie May forgets/misses the brief and turns up in head to toe fluoro pink. Uh oh! That means that Auntie May will be the central focus of the extended family photo shoot and will stand out like a sore thumb in the big family framed wall print!! Trust me, this has happened!!!
Don’t let this happen to you!!
Here are my top 5 tips to guide you in choosing outfits in preparing for your multigenerational family photo session:
1️⃣Coordinate Colors:
Instead of matching everyone's outfits exactly, go for a coordinated color palette. This adds visual interest and lets each family member show off their unique style.
2️⃣Dress for the Occasion:
Consider the location and vibe of the session. If it's outdoors, opt for comfortable and casual attire like flowy dresses, colorful tops with jeans, or coordinated casual outfits. For indoor settings, you can go a bit dressier with semi-formal attire.
3️⃣Add Patterns and Textures:
Don't shy away from patterns and textures! They bring depth and personality to your photos. Mix in plaids, florals, stripes, or fun accessories like hats, scarves, or statement jewelry. In my experience, it usually works well if you layer a slightly larger block coloured layer over the patterned clothing item. We usually discuss this during our pre-session consultation.
4️⃣Prioritize Comfort:
It's important that everyone feels comfortable and confident. Choose outfits that allow for easy movement and avoid anything that might make people feel self-conscious. Opt for breathable fabrics and sizes that fit well.
5️⃣Let Personalities Shine:
Your outfits should reflect your family's unique personalities. Don't be afraid to showcase individual styles and interests. Incorporate favorite colors or accessories that represent shared hobbies or passions.

Here’s a sneak peek from a beautiful family photo session in Watt Park, Milsons Point last week. Capturing 4 generations here, as the great grandparents had flown from India to spend some time with the family here in Australia and hang with the coolest little dude, J-man.
